Fish Oils have been in constant use since the early seventies, were then ignored by a large percentage of carp anglers when synthetic flavours were introduced and then hammered on throughout the country during the 1980's. Ever increasing oil levels in baits did cause some concern for the welfare of the carp population in some waters. However, today the situation is that fish oils are still used, but at more sensible levels.
Not only are fish oils attractive to carp, they are also a valuable food source, they are extremely rich in unsaturated fatty acids, particularly the omega 3 and 6 series and able to provide the essential fatty acids for a carp's metabolism. I use fish oils during the summer months, generally from late April through to mid-October. If oils are emulsified, they will continue to work through the winter, but I feel that they are a 'warm weather' additive.
Fish oils do need looking after. They oxidize particularly fast, especially when left in sunlight and under extreme heat. It is vitally important to keep all such oils in a dark container, the container lid tightly closed and in a cool dark place. In the summer months, keep refrigerated. Fish oils emulsify easily. For information on this look under the EMULSIFYING OILS link.
This oil is used as an antibiotic carrier in the salmon rearing industry, evidently they go berserk over the stuff! This oil emulsifies easily and is generally the one that I use in the colder water temperatures of early spring/late autumn. Use at 10 - 20 mls per 16oz mix.
Very oily and very smelly. Some of my friends have done very well with this oil when used with floaters; especially with 'floating cake' (see the 'Floaters' link for more information) . Use at 10 - 15 mls per 16oz mix.
An oil that has been around seemingly since the beginning of time! Still used by some of my friends with great success. Do not by the watery looking stuff in the clear glass bottles - you need the thick evil smelling stuff from Cornwall! Use at 5 - 25 mls per 16oz mix.
Another evil smelling oil! Still being used by my friends on a regular basis - just avoid the clouds of flies that will follow you around during the summer..... use at 5 - 15 mls per 16oz mix.
A strong smelling and distinct oil and one that carp respond well to. Use at 5 - 20 mls per 16oz mix.
One of the first oils to be used and still one of the most effective. Use at 10 - 15 mls per 16oz mix. |
